Her passion for animal art was evident at an early age, and her hands-on experience showing dogs gave her a deep understanding of animal form and structure. A graduate of Pratt Institute with a BFA in Illustration, Gina created the artwork for the Visualization of the Official Dachshund Standard and is also the author of two step-by-step tutorials on how to draw a realistic dog. Her work was featured in the June 2025 issue of CP Magic! Magazine. While she works in a variety of traditional mediums, she began drawing primarily with colored pencils in 2019 and offers commissions to private collectors. THE BERNARDS-RIDGE CONNECTION PAGE 8 NOV 2025-JAN 2026 theconnectionsnj.com Morristown | Princeton | Atlantic City Handling family law matters throughout New Jersey When It’s Your Move High-net-worth divorce is complicated. Division of assets, complex income, custody. The rules can seem tilted against you. Our attorneys have the legal know-how and national firm resources it takes to design a successful strategy.* Dedicated. Driven. Committed to helping you reach your goals. Eric Solotoff esolotoff@foxrothschild.com 973.994.7501 Jessica Diamond Lia jlia@foxrothschild.com 973.994.7517 *Results may vary depending on your particular facts and legal circumstances. amily matters are among the most personal and emotionally charged legal issues anyone can face. Whether it’s a divorce, custody arrangement, support dispute, or negotiating a prenuptial agreement, navigating these moments can feel overwhelming. That’s where having the right family law attorney can make all the difference. As the holidays remind us to reflect on gratitude, here are a few reasons to be thankful for the steady hand of a dedicated family law attorney. 1. They bring calm to chaos. Family disputes can feel like storms — unpredictable, emotional, and exhausting. A good family law attorney provides clarity and calm in the middle of that turbulence. They listen, understand, and guide you toward rational, informed decisions when emotions run high. Knowing that someone objective and experienced is protecting your legal interests allows you to focus on your well-being and your family’s future. 2. They protect what matters most. Whether it’s your children, your home, or your financial security, a family law attorney is your advocate in safeguarding the things that are most precious to you. They know how to balance empathy with strength, ensuring that your voice is heard and your rights are respected. Behind every custody schedule, support agreement, or settlement negotiation, a skilled advocate is working to create stability and fairness in your next chapter. 3. They handle the details so you can breathe. Legal paperwork, deadlines, and procedures can be daunting, especially when you’re already managing the emotional toll of family change. A good attorney takes that weight off your shoulders. They translate complex legal language into plain English, keep track of every filing, and make sure no important step is overlooked. In other words, they handle legal logistics, so you can focus on healing and rebuilding. 4. They help you see the bigger picture. It’s easy to get caught up in the moment, especially in matters involving conflict or heartbreak. A seasoned family law attorney helps you look beyond the immediate dispute toward long-term peace and stability. They’ll help you craft practical, sustainable solutions, not just short-term “wins.” Their experience can prevent future conflict and set you up for a smoother path ahead. 5. They remind you that you’re not alone. Family law is, at its heart, about people — about relationships, resilience, and new beginnings. A compassionate attorney understands that. They’ve guided countless clients through similar challenges and know what it takes to help you move forward. In moments when it feels like your world is shifting, your attorney is more than a legal advisor; they’re a trusted ally who stands beside you at every step. Family law is about more than just courtrooms and documents. It’s about families, futures, and fresh starts. As you reflect on the things you’re grateful for this season, don’t overlook the quiet strength of the person helping you navigate one of life’s hardest chapters. If you’re facing a family law issue, our office is here to help. Compassionate guidance, clear advice, and unwavering advocacy-that’s what you deserve, and that’s what we deliver. My holistic approach to allocation is to develop 3 separate buckets—tax-deferred assets, including pretax retirement accounts, post-tax assets-Roth accounts, and after-tax savings. Many investors I meet with tend to have a larger portion of savings in pretax retirement accounts, as I reference “top-heavy”. This is in part from making annual pretax contributions to items including 401K plans, and rollovers to a traditional IRA. At distribution, this leads to higher taxable income and further these funds are characterized as ordinary income. Developing tax-free retirement funds can be challenging. Many taxpayers are limited in making Roth contributions. Many 401K plans provide the opportunity to make both pretax and Roth post-tax contributions. Although Roth contributions are not tax-deductible, for some, the tax-free compounding over time can be worth significantly more than the upfront tax deduction. Either way, pre- or post-tax retirement contributions should take full advantage of any company-matching contributions; it just makes good sense. Post Tax Savings, as the name suggests, is money saved after paying applicable income taxes from the source. This could include employment, investment income, trust income, and IRA distributions. Inheritance and Life Insurance proceeds are typically received tax-free by the recipient. By now, my readers know I do not want investors to pay any unnecessary income taxes. Carefully growing generational wealth requires skill and attention. Taxes have become more relevant given the rising markets we have experienced over the last few years. No one likes to see big gains on their year-end 1099 tax form. For the income investor, I believe an allocation to municipal bonds could provide an attractive taxable equivalent yield. Particularly in hightax states such as NJ and NY. Of course, investments in municipal securities may not be appropriate for all investors. Equity Income-type investments may receive a lower capital gains tax rate on the dividends generated. Taxable Equity accounts should manage realized capital gains as they reduce after-tax returns. Actively managed mutual funds are generally not tax efficient. I believe the vehicle of choice for many successful investors is the separately managed account (SMA). A type of SMA is a direct index approach, which is designed to help manage capital gains. A key benefit of the direct index account is that it can be funded with your existing securities. If active management does not meet your needs, passive investing, more commonly found in Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), tends to be tax efficient. A professionally assembled Net worth statement is a great place to start. A detailed Net worth statement will illustrate how full or empty each of your 3 buckets might be. As a boutique office, we provide personalized service to our clients. Our practice is skilled in advanced planning techniques and is equipped to manage the complex needs of successful individuals and closely held or family businesses. We believe that efficient tax management can add meaningful long-term returns. I personally have over four decades of experience helping clients across a wide range of financial issues. Your chicken will be just as cuddly without toppling over.] There are many variations in size and construction. The original Emotional Support Chicken pattern (2023) was knitted. A crochet version was added in 2024. There are now variations with wings and legs, smaller versions, even chick size. There are crochet chicks made from 2 granny squares. The design gives the impression of wings. Don’t forget to name your chicken and make it personal. Annette has created names such as Lindsey LoHEN, BEAK-on-say, and CHICK-Kira. An attorney friend gifted one to a new judge and called her Ruth Bader GinsBIRD. There is just something about an Emotional Support Chicken that makes it comforting to young and old. It’s a gift you didn’t know you needed. Find the patterns on Ravelry at: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/emotional-support-chicken. Kits are also available from: www.theknittingtreela.com Granny Square Chick: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/granny-square-chicken e all need a little support now and then. Could an Emotional Support Chicken be the solution? I’m not speaking of a live chicken, but the DIY kind (do it yourself). This one does not require legal considerations such as Fair Housing, City Ordinances, Travel Restrictions, or Documentation. This kind travels well and is even accepted by TSA and fellow passengers. Believe it or not, this is a thing. The trend to knit or crochet a chicken has been going strong since 2024. Annette Corsino of The Knitting Tree, L.A., designed the pattern based on an earlier version by the late Beverly Galaskas, called Henrietta and Family. Annette designed the pattern during COVID when we were all locked down and searching for a cozy home craft. The pattern became so popular that the shop conducted KnitAlongs (a group activity where many knitters each work on the same pattern at the same time) and has since sold over 30,000 copies worldwide with availability in 5 languages - English, Danish, German, Portuguese, and Spanish. The step-by-step instructions are easy to follow, including many progressive photos and a video tutorial. Choose a main color and a contrasting color for the breast and tail stripes, then a bit of red and yellow for the comb, wattle, and beak, respectively. The chicken is knit flat in several sections: tail, body including neck and head, beak, wattle, comb, and base. The shaping uses short rows. A short row is a row that is not fully knitted; the work is turned before reaching the end of the row and then goes back to the beginning of the row. This creates a rounded shape. All is explained in the video tutorial. Stitch all together, add safety eyes or buttons, and Polyfil stuffing. Finish with a hug. [Note: Add a bit of weight for balance and stability. Although I have my hair dyed to a shade closest to my natural color, wear clothes that are considered “hip”, workout every day to maintain stamina and muscle tone, I am an older woman. Equally to the point, I no longer always receive a paycheck for the effort I put forth in my endeavors. And yes, that could be the end of the discussion. However, despite my lofty age, I choose to think of myself as vital, engaged and having much more to contribute to society than ever before in my life. Perhaps that emanates from the reality I almost died several times in my forties, lost over twenty years of my life suffering from bowel issues which were, thankfully, resolved by my ileostomy. Making up for lost time may be a piece of what drives me, but continuing to be relevant is the over arching thought in my mind, each and every day. The places I now put my energies are varied and extremely satisfying! They are curated from opportunities available to those of us of a certain age. Please understand that I am not unique. These opportunities are omnipresent. This summer, I facilitated a fourweek, ninety-minute class at Osher Lifelong Learning on the campus of Florida Atlantic University on “Being a Woman in 2025”. I will facilitate it again in March, changing the year to 2026. It will bring different challenges to the table, I assume, including understanding and adapting to artificial intelligence. The beauty of the experience was becoming intimately involved with amazing women who had much to share and were comfortable doing it in the safe space we created. Additionally, every Thursday morning, I travel to the high school of the incredible young lady I mentor through a program entitled Take Stock in Children. We meet during her lunch time and discuss her goals, thoughts, and dreams. The program provides all she needs to be successful in her high school career, positioning her to obtain a two-year scholarship, (which has the potential to be a free ride all four years) to a college in Florida. She has the opportunity to become the woman she desires, and I am so proud of her! Society needs young people determined to reach and exceed their potential. I am equally proud of the friends I have recruited to join me as mentors. We share the amazing feeling of doing for another what will help them do for others. There are many more commitments I have made to fulfill myself at this stage of life. Perhaps you, too, have a calling to spread your wings. If so, I encourage and support you…there is no time like NOW! SLICEOFLIFE You Must Be Retired! By Ellyn Mantell L

Adams Fine Clothing & Tuxedo 1275 Springfield Ave. New Providence, NJ 07974 908-665-0800 www.adamsfineclothing.com Introducing “City Tailor” by Samy Opening at Adams Fine Clothing Introducing our new alteration service. Let our Master Tailors work for you! Our tailor shop is open to the public. Bring us your Tailoring for Men Come see our New Fall Collections ack in July, I was out for drinks with a friend, and I posed a question to her. I asked, “Who do you think is the best-dressed guy in this bar and why?” Obviously, her immediate answer was me. But after I took myself out of the equation, she pointed to a younger guy about 5’5 wearing a white linen shirt and navy trousers. When I asked her why, she replied, “I really like the way his pants fit; you can tell he got them tailored.” And she was right (she always is)! When you’re a gentleman under a certain height, there is simply no way you’re going to find a perfectly fitting pair of pants, or anything for that matter. Which brings us to the theme of today’s article: getting your clothes tailored. Can I let you in on an industry secret? That shirt, pair of jeans, suit, etc., wasn’t made for you. It was made for Justin. Who is Justin? Justin is a young man living in NYC, about 5’11 (He tells people he’s 6’1, but we all know…), 170lbs, and works as a fit model. Which means 2-3 times a week, he goes into a company’s design studio and tries on a bunch of samples. If the samples work on him, BOOM; the designer has their size medium. Add an inch or two for a large, subtract an inch or two for a small, and that’s how clothing gets made! FASHIONFLASH Get It Tailored: Because I Said Sew By David J. Marzano Manager, Adams Fine Clothing So how can we take clothes meant for a guy we’ve never met and make them our own? Get them tailored! Tailoring is your not-so-secret style hack that unlocks not only a better wardrobe but a better you. Our consumerist society is built on instant gratification for the customer, which is generally a no-go for tailoring, as you must put in extra time to go to the tailor and pay for their services. But I find (preach vehemently), that by taking the time to dial in the fit of your wardrobe, you not only look better, you feel better. As a clothier, it’s an essential part of my job to communicate and recommend to my clients how to get the best fit possible, which starts with finding a garment that fits in the right spots. There are certain things you must get right and can’t tailor (and that’s a whole separate article coming soon!). Once you find the best fitting garment, you have to ask yourself what could take this fit from ordinary to extraordinary. Want to know another industry secret? Perfection is a myth. Nothing ever fits perfectly, especially off the rack, which is why tailoring is a crucial step that takes a garment one step closer to PERFECTION. And with that, my stylish readers, my loving ramblings have come to a close. So, I’ll leave you with a little piece of advice: next time you’re in a fitting room and find something you like that fits fairly well, don’t be Justin, be YOU, and find your fit and tailor! Adams Fine Clothing & Tuxedo 1275 Springfield Avenue in New Providence, New Jersey take this fit from ordi industry secret? Perfec ever fits perfectly, espe is why tailoring is a cru cial step that takes a gar B

The perfect winter day means crisp cold air, rosy cheeks, blue sky, and lots of activity. Ice skating is just the thing. Over the past few years, our winters have not lent themselves to frozen ponds in the parks or our backyards, but that does not mean that our families have to miss out on the thrill of skating. There are plenty of places to skate nearby, regardless of the weather, and to get a great workout and create lasting memories while sharing some laughs. Skating is not just fun-it is a low-impact full-body workout that has been proven to reduce stress, help balance, and improve cardiovascular health. Start off by dressing warmly and in layers. Whether the rink is indoors or out, the temperature will be cold, and being uncomfortable can ruin the day. Be sure to invest in a helmet, especially for children. Falls are a natural part of learning, and a helmet will greatly reduce the risk of a serious injury. The right fitting skates are also essential for comfort and safety. Good ankle support is crucial. Skates that are too big can cause blisters and make balancing more difficult. Where to go? New York City is just a train ride away and always makes for a great day trip. There are lots of iconic destinations to skate in New York. The rinks at Rockefeller Rockefeller Center, Bryant Park, and Wollman Rink in Central Park are all world-famous destinations with beautiful views and unforgettable experiences. They are part of New York City tradition and have been featured in countless movies, television shows, romantic proposals, and family memories. Now create your own and go! You can buy tickets to The Rink at Rocke- The Rink at Rockefeller Center online at www.rockefellercenter.com/buy-tickets. You can purchase a 60-minute skating session, a VIP skate, or the rental of an Apres Skate Chalet Apres Skate Chalet for a private group. At Bryant Park, Bryant Park, admission to skating is free, but there are fees to rent skates or for a “premium skate.” Learn more about skating at the Winter Village Winter Village in Bryant Park by visiting the website at bryantpark.org/activities/bank-of-americawinter-village-at-bryant-park. Wollman Rink Wollman Rink is a hub of winter activity. It has skating, but also hosts special events, themed skating nights, and live performances. Find out more at wollmanrinknyc.com/. If you want something closer to home, there is public skating indoors at Bridge- Bridgewater Sports Arena and at Mennan Arena in Morristown. For an outdoor experience, try Westfield Ice Rink at Gumbert Westfield Ice Rink at Gumbert Park. These rinks all offer public skates, hockey programs, and learn to skate programs if you catch the skating bug and are looking for more than just an afternoon. So do not let the weather get you down this winter. Whether it is indoors or outside, experience the joy of winter with some ice skating. This sport is not only fun but a great workout for the whole family. Now get out there and SKATE! Skating... By Joanne Kleinle FAMILY ADVENTURES J
